A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/16 inches (2.70 cm) in height overall consisting of two maroon lightning flashes in cross in front of four white sails of a windmill saltirewise, and in base on an undulating curved maroon scroll lined gold the inscription "SERVE AND SAVE" in gold letters, the ends of the scroll reversed and terminating on each side below the upper sails.
Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The cross, an emblem of aid and assistance, is composed of lightning flashes to indicate the unit's mission to provide hospitalization within the combat zone, its capability for speed in furnishing austere medical treatment in emergency and in preparation of patients in situations requiring evacuation. The windmill sails from the coat of arms of New York, New York, denote the organization's origin and location in that city.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 13 November 1972.
